After several bad floods, the worst in 1963, Branched Oak Lake, the
largest flood control reservoir in the Salt Creek basin, was developed
west of Raymond by the Corps of Engineers. This area attracts large
numbers of residents from surrounding communities to its recreational
facilities. The area now has established the Branched Oak Arboretum
consisting of numerous trees and shrubs. Resource services have
established a captive Canada Goose flock and introduced Wood Ducks
to the area. In 1968 interior roads, parking lots, camping areas
and boat ramps were constructed. Two swimming beaches were also
established. The Branched Oak Dog Trial Area was established in
1969 and includes approximately 800 acres. During the fall and
spring the area is used for trials with at least one national event held.
In 1972 picnic shelters, picnic tables, grills and boat docks were added.
Also in 1972, Lieber's Point was dedicated to Otto Lieber who was
instrumental in the development of Branched Oak reservoir area watershed
dam.
Hard surfacing of the roads was completed in 1972. In 1979 a new
campground was constructed and a snowmobile trail was added.
The area has a stock of Northern Pike, Catfish, Bluegill, Walleye, Largemouth Bass and Tiger Musky that has produced a number of master angler catches.
Branched Oak offers hunting, fishing, trapping, power boating, sailing,
water skiing, swimming, camping, hiking, natural beauty, and abundant
water fowl and wildlife.
Willard Estates is located on 160 acres, 1 mile east of Raymond. Woodcraft
Homes corporation subdivided it in 1976 into 44 acreage sites.
Several homes have been built.
