The Testing Process

Step 1.Make sure you meet the Building and Safety Qualifications before you register to take the exam.

JOURNEYMAN QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Applicants shall have at least four (4) years of practical experience as a registered Sprinkler System, Gas Extinguishing System, or Wet/Dry Chemical System Apprentice, in the design, layout, construction and/or installation, of the respective fire suppression system type.
    • Applicants, while regularly employed by a person, firm or corporation regularly engaged in the installation of sprinkler systems, gas extinguishing systems, or wet/dry chemical systems, shall receive one (1) year practical experience credit for each year of full-time employment.  The practical experience credited for part-time employment shall be determined by the fire code official.
    • Applicants, graduating from a four (4) year engineering course from an accredited college or university will receive two (2) years of practical experience credit required above.
    • Applicants, who have completed a course of study approved by the fire code official, in the design, layout construction and/or installation of sprinkler systems, gas extinguishing systems, or wet/dry chemical systems will receive one (1) year of practical experience credit required above.
    • A professional mechanical engineer registered in the State of Nebraska, will receive three (3) years of practical experience credit required above.
    • Sprinkler system, gas extinguishing system, or wet/dry chemical system education and training received from military service, extension courses, adult education classes, etc..., may account for practical experience credit at the discretion of the fire code official.

TRANSFER

An applicant holding a valid Sprinkler System, Gas Extinguishing System, or Wet/Dry Chemical System journeyman’s license, received by another state or municipal governmental agency, shall be entitled to take the respective fire suppression system type journeyman’s examination, established by the City of Lincoln, without submitting any additional qualifications.

CONTRACTOR QUALIFICATIONS

  1. Applicants shall be registered through the Department of Building and Safety as a licensed Sprinkler System, Gas Extinguishing System, or Wet/Dry Chemical System Journeyman for at least one (1) year; OR shall be a mechanical engineer graduate from an accredited college or university; AND
  2. Applicants shall have at least two (2) years of practical experience in the supervising, design, layout, construction, and installation of sprinkler systems, gas extinguishing systems, or wet/dry chemical systems; OR shall be a registered professional mechanical engineer in the State of Nebraska; OR shall obtain a (NICET) National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies Level 3 or 4.

TRANSFER

An applicant holding a valid Sprinkler System, Gas Extinguishing System, or Wet/Dry Chemical System Contractor’s license, received by another state or municipal governmental agency, shall be entitled to take the respective fire suppression system contractor examination, established by the City of Lincoln, without submitting any additional qualifications.

Step 3.The following are the CSA exams that City of Lincoln recognizes.

ASC2 - Sprinkler Commercial On-Site Competent Person

PEG2 - Pre-Engineered Gas Clean Agent On-Site

KHFE2 - Kitchen Hood & Fire Extinguisher (combined exam)

Everyone must register on the CSA exam site with the legal name that appears on their driver’s license. There will be a delay in receiving your test results and you will be required to provide a copy of your State-Issued ID before receiving your results.

Step 4.Upload exam results to Trade Professional VisualVault Account.

Export the CSA Results PDF document from the CSA website after the exam.

Login to your Trade Professional VisualVault Account.

Building and Safety Requirements

QUALIFICATIONS NECESSARY TO TAKE THE FIRE SPRINKLER - GAS EXTINGUISHER - WETDRY CHEMICAL EXAM

JOURNEYMAN

The applicant for a Fire Sprinkler, Gas Extinguisher or Wet/Dry Chemical Registration certificate shall have at least four (4) years of practical experience in the design, layout, construction and/or installation of Fire Sprinkler, Gas Extinguisher or Wet/Dry Chemical materials and equipment.

An applicant, while regularly employed by a person, frrm or corporation regularly engaged in the installation of Fire Sprinkler, Gas Extinguisher or Wet/Dry Chemical equipment and registered as an apprentice, shall receive one (1) year practical experience credit for each year of full time employment. The practical experience credited for part-time employment and applicants working for a person, firm or corporation in part-time Fire Sprinkler, Gas Extinguisher or Wet/Dry Chemical installations shall be determined by the Bmrd.

An applicant graduating from afour(4)-year engineering course of an accredited College or University will receive two (2) years of practical experience credit required above.

An applicant completing a course of study, approved by the Board, in the design, construction and installation of Fire Sprinkler, Gas Extinguisher or Wet/Dry Chemical will receive one (1) year of practical experience credit required above.

A professional mechanical engineer registered in the State of Nebraska, will receive three (3) years of practical experience credit required above.

The Fire Sprinkler, Gas Extinguisher or Wet/Dry Chemical education and training received from military service, extension courses, adult education classes, etc., may account for practical experience credit at the discretion of the board.

CONTRACTOR

The applicant for a Fire Sprinlder, Gas Extinguisher, or Wet/Dry Chemical Contractor certificate shall be the holder of a valid City of Lincoln Fire Sprinlder, Gas Extinguisher, or Wet/Dry Chemical Journeyman certificate for at least one (1) year or shall be a graduate Mechanical Engineer from an accredited College or University and have at least two (2) years practical experience in the planning, layout, supervising and installing of Fire Sprinkler, Gas Extinguisher or Wet/Dry Chemical equipment or shall be a registered professional Mechanical Engineer in the State of NE.

TRANSFER

An applicant holding a valid Journeyman or Contractor/Master Fire sprinkler, Gas Extinguisher or Wet/Dry Chemical License or Certificate, received by examination from another state or Municipal Governmental agency, shall be entitled to take the equivalent respective City of Lincoln Journeyman or Contractors examination without submitting any additional qualifications.

CSA Third Party Testing Details

  • CSA utilizes a simple on-line contact form attaching a photo head-shot of candidate, and submitting on-line payment for exam.  No lengthy applications or work experience forms.
  • CSA exams can usually be taken within several days of submitting request (based on proctoring option selected and test center availability).
  • A score report email will be provided immediately after exam which will include passing score, or failing score with topic scores for further study
  • A CSA photo ID card and certificate will be provided upon successful completion of an exam
  • All CSA exams require 80% passing score
  • All CSA exams require re-testing every 3 years for renewal to stay up-to-date with codes
  • Indicate if you will allow candidates to submit their “Passing” email to start AHJ licensing or if they must wait ~3 weeks for their ID card and certificate.
  • Candidates will submit one email to CSA for all correspondence including contact information, scheduling emails, payment receipts, score reports, etc.  Contractor should establish if this will be the individual candidate or a company scheduler / representative that can serve as a liaison with CSA staff.
  • Upon request by an AHJ, CSA will share limited information such as qualifications, current status, expiration dates, and company name on record.  CSA and the AHJ will work together if there is suspicion of misrepresentation of qualification, or falsified documents being used.
