“A” Street from 40th Street to 56th Street

Purpose and Need

The purpose of this project is to preserve and extend the service life of existing facilities and enhance safety by using safety conscious design. The improvements would satisfy existing and future traffic needs and conditions in a manner conducive to safety, durability, and economy of maintenance. The need of the project is to address curb and pavement conditions; lack of center turn lane from 40th to 48th; curb ramps; inlet tops; address crash rates and delay times at intersections; and address access management needs by evaluating streets and driveways for potential closure.

Project Area

Scope of Work

This project would rehabilitate approximately one mile of “A” Street between 40th and 56th streets. This project would consist of a mill and overlay of “A” Street from 40th to 56th streets; adding a center turn lane along “A” Street from 40th to 48th; and repair pavement base as needed. It would reconstruct pedestrian ramps and would also reconstruct inlet tops and curb and gutter. The project would study roundabout feasibility at the intersections of 40th and “A” streets, 48th and “A” streets, 48th Street and Cotner Boulevard, and Cotner Boulevard and “A” Street, which may result in the construction of roundabouts. The project would also analyze the pedestrian crossing near 52th Street, which may result in the removal of the pedestrian signal and installation of a Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB). There is potential 50th Street would be closed.
