What is the hiring process like?

Thank you for your interest in being an important part of the Lincoln transit team! To apply, you will need to go to lincoln.ne.gov/jobs, click on the position available and apply online. For each position available, there is an open application period applicants need to submit their resumes in order to be reviewed by the City of Lincoln Human Resources Department.

For applicants interested in applying to be bus an operator, several opportunities are available throughout the year to coordinate training sessions for groups of new employees. If you do not see a time where a bus operator position is available, you can sign up for an E-Notification. Select “Transit” and an email will be sent to you when a new hiring session begins.

I have never driven a bus or large commercial vehicle before. Should I still apply?

Yes! Lincoln’s transit system offers new employees a six to eight week long training including simulation training and a chance to earn their Commercial Driver’s License (CDL). There are a variety of tests and practice sessions new employees are required to pass before being assigned a bus route.

What benefits does the City offer?

What training is offered to employees once hired?

Lincoln’s transit system offers training for all teammates.

Bus operators take part in a six to eight week paid-training program once hired. Operators receive a comprehensive training package that includes customer service skills and emergency management. Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) training and licensing are a part of the package if requested.

Mechanics receive training on all types of propulsion systems which includes diesel, compressed natural gas (CNG) and electric buses.

What is the starting wage?

Pay varies per position and the added benefits of insurance, paid leave, retirement and longevity make the City an excellent employer.

What are the hours?

Bus operators will receive a minimum of eight hours a day, five days a week. Hours and days can be split between shifts Monday through Saturday.

Maintenance positions typically have set morning/afternoon or afternoon/evening schedules.

Administrative staff generally work 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

Will I be able to work overtime?

Overtime opportunities are generally available for bus operators. Overtime may be available for additional staff.

What is the dress code?

Bus operators and maintenance staff are provided a yearly uniform allowance.

Bus operators maintain their own uniforms.

Maintenance is provided a laundry service.

Administrative staff dress code is business attire.

Will I have my own bus and my own route?

Buses are assigned to different bus operators daily. Bus operators will need to be familiar with all routes as they may be required to drive multiple routes.

Will I be driving a paratransit vehicle or a transit bus?

Bus operators will be trained on both vehicle types. Mechanics will work on all fleet vehicles.

I know multiple languages. Is that something I should put on my job application?

Yes. The City’s transit system encourages people to highlight their career experiences and individual strengths on their resumes when applying.
