Indigenous Peoples' Day

Celebrating Nebraska's Indigenous Peoples' Day. Events feature a tribal flag dedication ceremony in the Nebraska State Capitol, unveiling of Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte sculpture and free public reception.

TRIBAL FLAG DEDICATION CEREMONY

9:30 a.m.–10:30 a.m.

Nebraska State Capitol

As defined in LB 848 and signed into law August 15, 2020, flags representing the four Nebraska headquartered flags (Omaha, Ponca, Santee Sioux, Winnebago) will be displayed in the Warner Legislative Chamber of the Nebraska State Capitol. A small reception with coffee and doughnuts will be hosted by Senator Brewer and Senator Pansing Brooks in the Capitol’s first floor cafeteria. This reception will follow the flag dedication ceremony and everyone is invited to attend.

DR. SUSAN LA FLESCHE PICOTTE SCULPTURE UNVEILING, POWWOW EXHIBITION, AND RECEPTION

11:00 a.m.–1:00 p.m.

Heritage Plaza, 332 Centennial Mall

This dedication event will recognize Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte, the first Native American physician in the United States. It will feature the unveiling of a larger than life size sculpture created by renowned artist Benjamin Victor.

Powwow Exhibition

Following sculpture dedication

The reception immediately following the unveiling and Powwow Exhibition will be open to the public. This dedication event will recognize Dr. Susan La Flesche Picotte, the first Native American physician in the United States. It will feature the unveiling of a larger than life size sculpture created by renowned artist Benjamin Victor.
