History of Easterday

The Easterday Recreation Center has long been a staple among the Parks and Recreation Department, serving a wide variety of Lincoln citizens. Easterday is best known for its Adaptive Recreation Activities, providing opportunities for young people and adults with special needs.

Easterday Center was created in 1970, named after Grace Bowen Easterday. Grace was the first secretary of the Lincoln Recreation Board when it was organized in 1925 and served on the board for 28 years until retiring in 1953. Grace passed away in 1969, shortly before the dedication of the City’s newest recreation center.

Before the new recreation center was opened to the public, Lincoln City Council voted to name the center after Grace Bowen Easterday, as the Easterday Recreation Center.

Since its doors opened in 1970, Easterday Recreation Center has identified itself as one of the City’s premiere centers for adaptive recreation. Young people and adults with special needs have long found opportunity at Easterday through different clubs, sports, and creative activities. Special Olympics programs are also offered at Easterday, providing collaborative training for athletes of all abilities.
