Bike to Work Week

Bike to Work Week is a national annual event that takes place the third week of May. Locally, this includes a weeks worth of activities to support bicycling to work including events, raffle prizes, and discounts from local businesses for customers biking to their shops. National Bike Challenge Champions

To celebrate National Bike Month in May, Love to Ride hosts a national challenge where riding earns you points towards prizes. In past years, the City participated as a community and logged an impressive amount of miles to gain us top finishes in our category (see below). Today, you can participate as an individual by visiting their website to learn more.

In 2021, Lincolnites logged 458,503 miles giving us a top finish in the category for cities our size and third place nationwide behind Portland and Atlanta.
In 2020, Lincoln was a National Bike Challenge champion for the fifth time in nine years, with 1,568 Lincoln riders pedaling more than all other cities in the nation, logging 453,529 miles.
Lincoln was the overall national champion in 2013, 2016, 2017, and 2019. Lincoln’s national championship victories surpass all other communities in the nation, beating cities like Chicago, Atlanta, Portland, and Philadelphia.
Lincoln cyclists won the month-long, business-oriented CycleSeptember challenge in 2020 with 80,501 miles, pedaling more than all other cities in the nation.

Trail-a-Thon - The Lincoln Trail-A-Thon is a challenge to ride, run, jog or walk all 79 miles of trails within the Lincoln city limits throughout the year. Visit GPTN for more details.

National Ride a Bike Day - The first ever National Ride a Bike Day was held on Earth Day in 2021. Participants were encourage to ride a bike that day at their own pace, either for fun, to run an errand, or on their commute. The League of American Bicyclists promotes National Ride a Bike Day annually on the first Sunday of every May.

Tour de Lincoln - Hosted by the Great Plains Trails Network (GPTN), this free event showcases trails in all four quadrants of the City. The four separate rides begin at 6:00 p.m. every Thursday in May at the Jayne Snyder Trails Center, 21st and "Q" Streets. Tour de Lincoln will be following CDC guidelines for events. Prairie to Prairie Run-Bike-Run - A fundraiser for the Prairie Corridor on Haines Branch consisting of a Run-Bike-Run that can be done as an individual, a 2 person team, or a 3 person team. The event consists of three legs – a 5k run at Pioneers Park Nature Center, a 15-mile gravel bike ride to Spring Creek Prairie, and a second 5k run at Spring Creek Prairie. Individuals can tackle all three legs, or each can be completed by a member of a 2- or 3-person team.

Trail Trek – This celebration of Lincoln's trail system is led by GPTN in June and features four fun rides ranging from 10 to 44 miles. Each participant receives a shirt, a water bottle (first 1,000 entries), on-trail water and snacks, and lunch at Speedway Village. For more information, visit gptn.org.

BRAN – BRAN stands for Bicycle Ride Across Nebraska and is a once a year opportunity to visit the sites and enjoy the country hospitality of Nebraska from the seat of your bicycle. Proceeds from the June ride are used to fund scholarships at post-secondary schools in Nebraska (Nebraska students attending Nebraska schools).For more information, visit http://bran-inc.org.

September

Goldenride – A weekend bicycle event in September that will start at Lincoln’s The Hub Cafe/Jayne Snyder Trails Center and follow the Homestead Trail 44 miles south to Chautauqua Park in Beatrice. The event supports the work of Bike Walk Nebraska.

Bites, Bikes, & Bison – Bites, Bikes & Bison is an annual fundraising event to support Pioneers Park Nature Center and its educational programming. This year’s bicycle tour takes brunch on two wheels with a scenic ride in Pioneers Park and through downtown Lincoln including stops for food and drink at popular destinations.
