Salt Creek Floodplain Study Virtual Town Hall Set For January 26

Published on January 19, 2021

The public is invited to attend a virtual town hall from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, January 26, to learn the results and recommendations from the Salt Creek Floodplain Resiliency Study.  The event is free and registration is required by visiting saltcreekstudy.com.

Residents will have an opportunity to review the study recommendations and learn about possible proactive policy changes to reduce risks associated with flood events. Study projections predict severe droughts, rainstorms and flood levels two feet higher than current levels. Salt Creek has had 100 flood events since 1900.

Some recommendations would be to consider elevating floodplain standards, incorporating updated data into new floodplain maps and develop additional strategies to keep local floodplains resilient.  Study results, recommendations and actions will be incorporated into the Lincoln Climate Action Plan currently being developed.

Lincoln Transportation and Utilities (LTU), the Lower Platte South Natural Resources District (LPSNRD) and other interested groups have partnered on the study of the management of Salt Creek.  Salt Creek is a major stream that runs through the west part of Lincoln and collects the majority of water run-off around the city.

The Salt Creek Floodplain Resiliency Study was conducted by Olsson, a local engineering and design firm, and Michael Baker International, a firm that specializes in floodplain management and policy.
