LTU Receives Pavement Design and Construction Award

Lincoln Transportation and Utilities (LTU) today announced it has received a Nebraska Concrete Paving Association (NCPA) award for best pavement design and construction. The project at the South 56th Street and Yankee Hill Road intersection was selected in the “Local Projects of Less Than 30,000 Square Yards” category.

The 15,300 square-yard-project was recognized for excellent concrete subgrade preparation and pour scheduling, exceeding concrete quality expectations, and great teamwork. Construction took place from June to December 2020.

The award was presented January 24 at the NCPA awards banquet at the Cornhusker Marriott.

“By working closely with our partners on this project, we are paving the way for safety, success, and growth in the City of Lincoln,” said LTU Director Liz Elliott. “This project was designed and constructed with the future in mind. The city will save time and money while minimizing inconvenience to traffic when the intersection is expanded, as outlined in the City of Lincoln’s Long Range Transportation Plan.”

The project also improved safety by replacing the original four-way stop intersection at South 56th Street and Yankee Hill Road with a single-lane roundabout, Elliott said. The intersection averaged five crashes per year before construction, with only two crashes since opening in December 2020.

The project design included accommodations for a future two-lane roundabout, an expanded project corridor, and stormwater pipe system. The design and construction included future considerations for additional pavement, sidewalks, recreational paths, and drainage requirements.

Key participants in this $3.092 million project included LTU, Olsson, Alfred Bensch & Company, and Constructors, Inc. Federal highway safety funds were used for the improvements.

The NCPA is a trade association that represents the interests of those involved with the design, construction, and preservation of concrete pavements in Nebraska. The NCPA awards recognize the best cement concrete pavement projects, rating them in design and construction. The awards encourage high-quality workmanship in concrete pavement projects.
