Parks and Recreation staff will conduct a controlled burn from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, September 27, in Wilderness Park. A partial burn of the 20-acre area will be located in the Otoe Prairie portion of the park, southeast of the Pioneers Boulevard trailhead parking lot, 400 Pioneers Boulevard
The yellow trail will be closed at markers 19, 23, and 26 from early Friday until noon on Saturday, September 28. Closures may be extended if needed. Park users are advised to avoid the area during this time.
"Controlled burns effectively manage land with native plants by preventing invasive species like cedar trees from overcrowding, reducing wildfire risk, and enhancing wildlife habitat," said Aaron Druery, Greenways District Supervisor, Lincoln Parks and Recreation. "We closely monitor air quality and weather to ensure safety during the burns."
For more information on the prairie and ongoing management efforts, call Aaron Druery, Lincoln Parks and Recreation, 402-499-1044. Druery will not be available during the burn Wednesday.
