Updated July 12, 2019
Scope of Work
This project includes repairs of the stair structure and bikeway, and installation of storm sewer along the Rock Island Trail from South Street to Calvert Street. Project benefits include eliminating standing water in low areas, reducing mud and ice on the trail for improved trail safety, and improved pedestrian school routes.
2019 construction will take place between Sheridan Boulevard and Calvert Street. Work includes bikeway repair, storm sewer installation and landscaping along the bikeway.
Access During Construction
Sheridan Boulevard will have closures below the Penny Bridges July 16 and 17, 2019, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. each day. Westbound lanes will be closed Tuesday, July 16, as well as the sidewalk on the north side of the street. Eastbound lanes will be closed Wednesday, July 17, as well as the sidewalk on the south side of the street. Digital signs will alert traffic to upcoming work and lane closures.
During construction, work areas along the bikeway shall be closed with detours marked for pedestrians and cyclists. The recommended trail detour is Van Dorn, 31st and and Calvert Streets.
- Trail closure
Construction began September 24, 2018. Wet weather in the fall caused delays and construction was suspended for the winter. Work is expected to resume July 8, 2019, and the project is anticipated to be completed by September 8, 2019.
