Open House Scheduled on Railroad Quiet Zone Study

July 6, 2007

The public is invited to an open house Thursday, July 12 on a plan to create a railroad quiet zone along the BNSF Railway through the South Salt Creek neighborhood in southwest Lincoln. The open house is from 5 to 7 p.m. at Park Middle School, 855 South 8th Street. Participants should use the south entrance. A brief presentation will begin at 5:30 p.m., followed by an opportunity to discuss the project with the engineers working on the proposed quiet zone.

Information will be available on the preliminary plans for the improvements necessary to create the quiet zone. The following at-grade railroad crossings are included within the proposed quiet zone:

  • Park Boulevard near 3rd Street
  • South Street near 3rd Street
  • “D” Street at 3rd Street
  • “J” Street west of 4th Street
  • 2nd Street at “J” Street
  • 1st Street at “J” Street

The potential safety measures that would allow for the silencing of train horns could include raised medians, one-way streets, four quadrant gates, temporary or permanent street closures and wayside horns.
