Work will begin Monday, July 17 on N. 16th and Vine streets to change traffic flow within the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) city campus. Both streets will remain open during the project, but will be reduced to single-lane travel. Brief intersection closures in the project area will be necessary when traffic signals are removed. Work is expected to be completed in three weeks.
The project will include:
The changes to guide traffic to the six-lane Antelope Valley Parkway will increase pedestrian and cyclist safety on campus, one of the original objectives of the Antelope Valley Project and UNL's campus master plan. The changes also will reduce capital and maintenance costs for the City.
The City and UNL scheduled the work to meet traffic control needs required to begin demolition work in early August of Cather and Pound residence halls and the arrival of students for the fall semester. The changes also coordinate with UNL's plan, pending City Council approval, to close 17th street to through traffic between "S" and Vine streets.
