Hamann Rose Garden

Roses have been a part of Lincoln’s public display gardens for over 75 years.  Hamann Rose Garden located near 27th and C streets was renovated in 2008 and features many varieties of Hybrid Tea Roses, Floribundas, Grandifloras and mini roses in a formal setting of boxwood hedges, hardy perennials and evergreens..  All-Americas Rose Selection (AARS) award-winning roses are also on display in the AARS official Rose Display Garden.

During the recent renovation, several site improvements were made such as

  • New accessible walkways
  • Site furnishings and ornamental lighting
  • New pavilion
  • Renovated fountain with a new centerpiece sculpture
  • West entrance iron fence and gates
  • East entrance columns
  • Bronze sculpture

Plant Material

  • 123 varieties of roses
  • Many ornamental trees and shrubs
  • Includes a large Hydrangea collection

Volunteer Events

Garden Gab
Garden Gab meets at the Sunken Gardens Pavilion, 27th and Capital Parkway every Tuesday and Thursday, May through October, from 9a-noon. These are weekly "Learn and Do" sessions with the Public Gardens staff which cover different weekly topics on the growing culture of plants used in our gardens. Following the sessions, the newly learned skills are then put to use at Sunken Gardens, Hamann Rose Garden and the Rotary Strolling Garden.Visit the Public Gardens Volunteer page for a list of monthly topics.


Garden Docents

Volunteers are needed to provide information and lead guided tour groups through Sunken Gardens, Hamann Rose Garden and Rotary Strolling Garden. Docent training is available.

Rose Garden Spring Clean-Up
Volunteers are encouraged to participate in “Learn and Do” rose garden spring maintenance program on Saturday, April 11 at 1:00pm. This program will show volunteers:

  • Proper spring pruning of Hybrid Tea Roses as well as shrub rose and miniature rose spring clean-up.
  • Proper maintenance techniques will be shown for general rose care during the summer growing season.
  • Tools of the trade and their maintenance techniques.
  • Rose Garden Spring Clean-up - Saturday, April 11 at 1:00pm.
