Plumbing Apprentice - To become a registered plumbing apprentice, you will need to work for a licensed plumbing journeyman or a licensed plumbing contractor assisting in the design, layout, construction and/or installation of plumbing equipment.
Plumbing Journeyman - Must pass an examination prior to obtaining a plumbing journeyman license. To be eligible to take the examination applicants shall have at least four (4) years of practical experience in the design, layout, construction and/or installation of plumbing equipment. This can be accomplished by:
- Maintaining your apprentice license for four (4) years.
- Graduation from a two-year course of study in the construction and installation of plumbing equipment will count towards one (1) of the four (4) years of practical experience.
- Graduation from a four (4) year engineering course of an accredited college or university will count toward two (2) of the four (4) required years of practical experience.
- A Mechanical Engineer registered in the State of Nebraska will count towards three (3) or the four (4) years of practical experience.
- Plumbing education and training received from military service, extension courses, adult education classes, etc. may account for practical experience.
Master Plumbing Contractor - Must pass an examination prior to obtaining a plumbing master contractor license. To be eligible to take the examination applicants must:
- Hold a valid plumbing journeyman’s license for a period of at least one (1) year.
OR
- Obtain an engineering degree from an accredited college or university and have at least two (2) years’ experience in the planning, layout, supervising and installing of plumbing equipment.
OR
- be a registered Mechanical Engineer in the State of Nebraska.
Mechanical Apprentice – To become a registered mechanical apprentice you will need to work for a licensed mechanical journeyman or licensed master mechanical contractor assisting in the design, layout, construction and/or installation of mechanical equipment.
Mechanical Journeyman - Must pass an examination prior to obtaining a mechanical journeyman license. To be eligible to take the examination applicants shall have at least three (3) years of practical experience in the design, layout, construction and/or installation of mechanical equipment. This can be accomplished by:
- Maintaining your apprentice license for three (3) years.
- Graduation from a two-year course of study in the design, construction and installation of mechanical equipment will count towards one (1) of the three (3) years of practical experience.
- Graduation from an accredited four-year engineering course will count toward two (2) of the three (3) required years of practical experience.
- A Mechanical Engineer registered in the State of Nebraska will receive three (3) years of practical experience.
- Mechanical education and training received from military service, extension courses, adult education classes, etc. may account for practical experience.
Master Mechanical Contractor – Must pass an examination prior to obtaining a mechanical master contractor license. To be eligible to take the examination applicants must:
- hold a valid mechanical journeyman’s license for a period of at least one (1) year.
Fire Suppression Apprentice – To become a registered fire suppression apprentice you will need to work for a licensed fire suppression journeyman or licensed fire suppression contractor assisting in the installation, alteration, repair, inspection or testing of fire suppression systems.
Fire Suppression Journeyman - Must pass an examination prior to obtaining a fire suppression journeyman license. To be eligible to take the examination applicants shall have at least four (4) years of practical experience in the design, layout, construction and/or installation of the respective fire suppression system type. This can be accomplished by:
- Maintaining your apprentice license for four (4) years.
- Completion of a course of study approved by the fire code official, in the design, construction, and installation of fire suppression systems will receive one (1) year of practical experience credit.
- Graduation from an accredited four-year engineering course will count toward two (2) of the four (4) required years of practical experience.
- A mechanical engineer registered in the State of Nebraska will receive three (3) years of practical experience.
- Sprinkler system, gas extinguishing system or wet/dry chemical system education and training received from military service, extension courses, adult education classes, etc. may account for practical experience.
Fire Suppression Contractor – Must pass an examination prior to obtaining a fire suppression contractor license. To be eligible to take the examination applicants must:
- Be a licensed fire suppression system journeyman, currently registered through the Department of Building and Safety, for at least one (1) year.
OR
- Shall be a mechanical engineer graduate from an accredited college or university, have at least two (2) years of practical experience in the planning, layout, supervising and installing of fire suppression equipment, and shall be a registered professional mechanical engineer in the State of Nebraska or (NICET) National Institute for Certification in Engineering Technologies Level 3 or 4.
