Motor Vehicle Safety 2022

Ped-Bike-336x280a.png

The year 2022 had the highest number of fatalities resulting from motor vehicle accidents ever recorded in the city of Lincoln. That same year LLCHD, Lincoln Transportation and Utilities, Lincoln Police Department, Lincoln Public Schools, and Hospital partners from Bryan and CHI connected intentional efforts to reduce accidents, injuries, and deaths related to motor vehicles.  A five-year review of LPD bicycle and pedestrian accident reports involving children ages 5-14 years identified the Hartley Elementary School community as a neighborhood of high concern. Upon completion of a thorough bike and pedestrian injury risk assessment including: traffic studies; parent, staff, and neighborhood focus groups; and a comprehensive walking audit, several injury prevention measures were implemented. These measures are described in the “Accomplishments” tab. For more information on this project and future similar efforts, please contact Lincoln Transportation and Utilities and Lincoln Police Department.

Accomplishments

  • Installation of a signed and marked pedestrian crosswalk on 34th Street.

  • Vehicle speed reduced in advance of the school zone on Vine Street from 25 to 20 mph.

  •  Additional Lincoln Police Department traffic enforcement on Vine Street.

  •  Installation of an LPI (Leading Pedestrian Interval) at the N 33rd and Vine Street signal. When a pedestrian pushes the button to cross, a “WALK” indication is provided a few seconds before vehicles get a green light. This allows pedestrians to get established in the crosswalk and be more visible to turning vehicles.
