Before a Heat Event, Be Prepared!

High heat and humidity can cause heat-related illnesses. Take steps to prepare and help lessen the impact of heat on our health and our community as temperatures continue to rise.

Prepare yourself and your family

  • Gather food, water and medications in advance in case you need to relocate to a cooler location.
  • Know your neighbors and be ready to check on them along with any relatives and friends who may be at higher risk or who live alone.
  • Learn more about the signs of heat-related illness and treatment.
  • Know where you can stay cool in case you need to go there. Locations could include: senior centers, recreation centers, Lincoln City Library branches.  Learn more about local cooling centers.

Prepare your home

  • Aging Partners has a limited number of fans for distribution on a first-come-first-served basis to adults age 60 and older.  The fans are available by calling 402-441-8815, and no financial screening is required. 
  • Install window air conditioners and insulate around them.
  • Cover windows with drapes or shades.
  • Weather-strip doors and windows to keep cool air in.
  • Use window reflectors designed to reflect heat back outside.

Prepare your pets

  • Make sure pets and livestock that live outdoors will have plenty of fresh, cool water and shade.
  • Have a plan to bring pets indoors if needed.
