40th Street from Yankee Hill Road to Rokeby Road

Improvement Project

Updated March 2023

Lincoln Transportation and Utilities (LTU) is improving approximately one mile of South 40th Street, between Yankee Hill Road and Rokeby Road. This project includes widening of South 40th Street, drainage improvements, and improvements to the intersections along South 40th Street at Prairie Wind Road and Hohensee Drive.

This project is being completed in two phases:

  1. South 40th Street and Rokeby Road intersection.
  2. South 40th Street roadway improvements from north of Rokeby Road to Yankee Hill Road including intersections.

Intersections and corridor enhancements will increase pedestrian safety by including 5-foot sidewalks that meet Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards and crossings with ADA-compliant curb ramps. All improvements meet current design standards.

Funding Details

This improvement project is projected to cost an estimated $16 million. This project is currently funded by Highway Allocation Funds, Street Improvement Vehicle Tax commonly known as Wheel Tax, and impact fees through the City of Lincoln. With this funding option, developers provide up-front funds to the City of Lincoln to construct improvements. The City then pays back that loan over time through impact fees. Impact fees are collected by the City on new construction that occurs within the project area. This allows the City to generate revenue for infrastructure (like roads) needed to serve areas of growth and new development sooner.

Access During Construction

South 40th Street is expected to be closed to through traffic for the duration of construction. Access to individual properties and emergency services will be maintained at all times.

Lincoln Transportation and Utilities appreciates the public’s patience during this work. Lane closures and roadway closures are anticipated throughout the phases of the project. Local traffic can access businesses using adjacent streets. The traveling public is encouraged to find alternative routes and to use the WAZE app for assistance. The project dates are subject to change due to weather and unforeseen circumstances.
