84th and U.S. 6/Cornhusker Highway - Intersection Improvement Project

U.S. Department of Transportation - Federal Highway Administration

Location

Intersection of 84th and US-6/Cornhusker Highway

Project Location

Purpose and Need

The purpose of this project is to reduce the frequency and severity of crashes at the intersection, improve the mobility of the traveling public and improve the reliability of the transportation system by providing safer and more efficient traffic operations.

The need for the project is based on a safety analysis that determined cost effective mitigation is possible and feasible.

Scope of Work

The planned project would include replacing the existing traffic signal with a roundabout. Roundabouts are safer intersections that provide fewer conflict points, slower speeds, shorter wait times, and typically cost less than signalized intersections.

Additional work would include:

  • utility relocations
  • new street lights
  • traffic monitoring infrastructure
  • retaining walls

Project Funding

This project is federally funded.

Schedule

Construction could begin as early as fall 2027 and be completed by fall 2028.

Access During Construction

The improvements would be constructed under traffic with lane closures controlled by appropriate traffic control devices and practices. The project may require the closure of the intersection or certain movements during construction. The anticipated detour for US-6/Cornhusker Highway would utilize Nebraska Link 55X/N. 56th Street and Interstate 80 (I-80). The N. 84th Street detour route would utilize N. 148th Street and Adams Street.
