48th & Calvert and 56th & Calvert Intersection Improvement Project

Purpose and Need

The purpose of this project is to remove existing traffic signal infrastructure and replace it with appropriate intersection control, improve the mobility of the traveling public, and improve the reliability of the transportation system by providing more efficient traffic operations at the intersections of South 48th Street and Calvert Street and South 56th Street and Calvert Street.

The project is needed to remove traffic signal infrastructure that has exceeded its expected lifespan and bring intersection control into conformance with current City of Lincoln guidelines and specifications. The project is also needed to improve pedestrian crossings to meet current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines.

Project Locations

Scope of Work

At South 48th Street and Calvert Street, work would consist of removing and replacing traffic signal poles and related infrastructure. Reconstruction of the sidewalk and curb ramps would be required to meet ADA standards. Grading is necessary at the intersection and work would include further ground disturbance for the installation of the signal poles, signal cabinet pad, pull boxes, conduits, and related signal infrastructure.

At South 56th Street and Calvert Street, work would consist of removing traffic signals and related infrastructure, reconstruction of the sidewalk and curb ramp to meet ADA standards and converting the intersection to a roundabout. Grading would be required at the intersection and work would include further ground disturbance to reconstruct affected subsurface utilities such as storm sewer, sanitary sewer, and water main as well as above ground utilities such as streetlights, fire hydrants and pull boxes.

Project Funding

This project includes federal and local funds.

Schedule

Construction could begin as early as summer 2027 with completion anticipated by fall 2028.

Access During Construction

The improvements at the intersection of South 48th Street and Calvert Street would be constructed under traffic with lane closures controlled by appropriate traffic control devices and practices. Temporary sidewalk detours would be necessary under the construction of the proposed project. Sidewalk detours would utilize Sherman Street, Hillside Street, Calvert Street, Bancroft Avenue, Prescott Avenue, South 46th Street, South 48th Street, South 51st Street, and South 52nd Street.

The improvements at the intersection of South 56th Street and Calvert Street would be constructed under full closure and detours would be necessary. A detour would be provided utilizing South 56th Street, South 70th Street, Pioneers Boulevard, Van Dorn Street, and Normal Boulevard. Sidewalk detours would utilize Sherman Street, South 51st Street, Calvert Street, South 52nd Street, and Bancroft Avenue.
