Research Sources

  • Sanborn Fire Insurance Maps: These maps were produced for Lincoln by the insurance company in 1884, 1886, 1891, 1903, 1928, and 1949 (with updates through 1957). These maps can be found on the Library of Congress archives site and through the City of Lincoln Libraries online resources, but they have been stitched together on the Development Viewer here. From the layers tab click on "Sanborn Images" and then check the box for the years you want to view. Make sure you are zoomed in close for the image to appear. Turn on the aerials and play with the transparency bar to see the changes from then to now.
  • Brown Bag Lectures: The Brown Bag Lecture series put on by the Preservation Association of Lincoln has an archive of recordings on specific people, places, and preservation topics all related to Lincoln.
  • Building Permit Records: Historic Building Permit Cards are searchable by address for properties in Lincoln dating to 1903 when Lincoln's first building permit was issued. Area's without original permits include the former towns or Bethany, College View, University Place, and Havelock. Later years in the 1920s permits begin showing up for these properties as they were annexed into the city of Lincoln.
  • Architects and Prominent People: Historic Nebraska - People, Places and Landscapes has information on a variety of topics throughout the state of Nebraska including Nebraska architects and historic markers (http://www.e-nebraskahistory.org/index.php?title=Main_Page)
  • Early Lincoln Images: Library of Congress/American Memory has a host of historic images including the 1889 Bird's Eye View of Lincoln and 1930s/'40s Lincoln photos
  • History of Lincoln up to 1882: History of the State of Nebraska, A. T. Andreas, 1882 is a publication on the history of Nebraska from territory days through 1882, written by an early pioneer at that time. History of Nebraska, Morton and Watkins, 1918 is another history of the development of Nebraska through 1882 (http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ne/topic/resources/OLLibrary/MWHNE/mwhne000.htm)
  • Historic Postcards: "Penny Postcards from Nebraska" includes over 3 dozen from Lincoln and Lancaster County
  • National Register in Nebraska: Nebraska Properties on the National Register of Historic Places
