Impaired Driving Enforcement Project Begins December 1

Published on November 30, 2023

The Lincoln Police Department (LPD) announced it will join a nationwide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” law enforcement effort from Friday, December 1, through Monday, January 1, 2024. Officers will conduct extra enforcement that focuses on impaired driving throughout Lincoln during weekend evenings.

The Nebraska Department of Transportation – Highway Safety Office is funding overtime pay for increased enforcement during this campaign.

In 2022, LPD investigated 6,906 crashes, of which 330 drivers were cited for DUI. Eight of those drivers were arrested for a felony for causing serious bodily injury to another person. Officers arrested 1,099 people for DUI in 2022. Of those arrests:

  • 197 were the offender’s second DUI or greater.
  • 451 of those arrested had a blood alcohol concentration exceeding .150 (nearly twice the legal limit).
  • 17 of those arrested had a child in their vehicle.
  • 57 of those were arrested for being under the influence of drugs other than alcohol.

LPD recommended several ways residents can stay safe this holiday season:

  • Plan ahead. If you are drinking, do not plan on driving. Designate a sober driver for the evening or arrange for alternative transportation in advance.
  • If you are impaired, do not drive and find another way home. Use a taxi, shared ride service or call a friend or family member.
  • Be responsible. If someone you know has been drinking, do not let them get behind the wheel. If you see an impaired driver on the road, contact law enforcement. Your actions could save your life or someone else’s.
