The Lincoln Police Department (LPD) today announced it will conduct a traffic enforcement project February 7 through 9 focused on impaired driving. Additional officers will be on patrol Super Bowl weekend to identify and apprehend drivers impaired by alcohol and/or drugs. The initiative is made possible through a grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office, underscoring the department’s commitment to promoting road safety. In 2024, LPD arrested 1,349 drivers for driving under the influence (DUI), which is the highest number of DUI arrests in a single year since 2014. Additionally, alcohol or drugs were known factors in six fatal crashes last year. LPD reminds community members that impaired driving poses a significant risk to everyone on the road, and that the department’s goal is not only to hold impaired drivers accountable but also to prevent potential tragedies. The Lincoln Police Department urges everyone to plan ahead for Super Bowl festivities by designating a sober driver or using ride-share services.
