LPD Makes Arrest in Fatal Shooting | September 2026

UPDATE (September 16) | The Lincoln Police Department (LPD) has made an arrest in a fatal shooting that occurred on Tuesday, September 15.

37-year-old Tyler Benzel of Lincoln is in the Lancaster County Jail on charges of first-degree murder and use of a firearm to commit a felony. 

Investigators conducted multiple interviews and reviewed home security video footage. They believe Benzel shot the victim one time. Multiple weapons have been recovered from the scene.  
 
The incident began around 7:20 p.m. when officers responded to a disturbance involving juveniles in the area of N. 47th Street and Cleveland Avenue.  
 
Officers contacted some of those involved while others ran off, including the victim. About 15 minutes later, while interviewing those still on scene, they heard a gunshot about a block away near N. 46th Street and Madison Avenue. 
 
Investigators learned the victim and other individuals with her got into a verbal and physical altercation at this location, believed to be initiated by the suspect’s wife. Benzel exited his home, left the property and reportedly told them to leave and made verbal threats before raising the gun and firing.  
 
Officers arrived within moments and found a 19-year-old Lincoln woman with a single gunshot wound. They immediately performed life-saving measures on the victim. She was taken to the hospital where she died from her injuries. An autopsy will be performed. 

Our thoughts are with her family and friends during this difficult time. We will not release her name until there has been ample time for her loved ones to be notified.

On Tuesday, September 15, around 7:20 p.m., officers responded to a disturbance involving juveniles in the area of N. 47th Street and Cleveland Avenue. 

Officers contacted those involved when some of them ran off. While interviewing those still on scene, they heard a gunshot about a block away near N. 46th Street and Madison Avenue.

One person is in custody and police are speaking with multiple witnesses. Crime scene technicians remain on scene working on the investigation.
