LPD Reports Decline in Auto Thefts in 2025

The Lincoln Police Department (LPD) today announced that auto thefts and attempts in Lincoln are down 36% compared to the same time frame in 2024. Auto theft attempts are down 74% citywide.

From January 1 to July 14, 2025, LPD took 378 reports of auto thefts, of which 51 (13.5%) were attempts. During that same time frame in 2024, officers took 588 reports of auto thefts, of which 197 (33.5%) where attempts.

“Keeping our city safe is a community effort. The Lincoln Police Department wants to commend residents for taking action to prevent their vehicle from being stolen and we encourage everyone to remain vigilant,” said Lincoln Police Chief Michon Morrow.

The percentage of unlocked vehicles being stolen is on the rise, from 41% in 2024 to 63% in 2025.

LPD reminds drivers to follow these vehicle safety tips:

  • Lock your car doors, even at home
  • Park inside a secure garage if possible
  • Take your keys, even the spare one
  • Remove or hide valuables and firearms
  • Never leave your car running unattended
  • Use anti-theft devices when possible
