LPD Seat Belt Enforcement Project Begins November 26 | 2025

Published on November 21, 2025

The Lincoln Police Department (LPD) today announced it will conduct a seat belt enforcement project November 26 through 30. Officers will focus enforcement efforts across the city, especially during peak travel times around the Thanksgiving holiday. The enforcement effort is part of the national “Make It Click” campaign to create a visible, community-wide reminder that wearing a seat belt is a simple action with profound consequences.

Seat belts are one of the most effective tools for saving lives. Properly worn front-seat belt use reduces the risk of fatal injury by about 45% for passenger‐car occupants and up to 60% for light-truck occupants. However, Nebraska continues to lag behind national averages in seat belt use. In a 2023 survey, Nebraska’s rate was approximately 77.3%, placing it near the bottom among U.S. states. Fatal crashes too often involve unbelted occupants. In Nebraska in 2019, 124 of 248 traffic fatalities (63%) of passenger‐vehicle occupants killed were not wearing seat belts.

The enforcement project is made possible by a grant from LPD’s partners at the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office.
