The Lincoln Police Department (LPD) today announced it will conduct a seatbelt enforcement project from May 15 through 31. The initiative is part of the nationwide “Make it Click” campaign with LPD officers focusing on peak times when seatbelt use tends to drop – evenings and weekends. During the two-week enforcement period, LPD will increase patrols citywide. Both drivers and front-seat passengers can be cited under Nebraska seatbelt laws. In 2024, Nebraska’s seat belt rate was only 80.2%, which is the fifth worst in the nation. Of Nebraska’s 236 fatalities in 2025, 70 were not wearing a seat belt. Statistics show that a person is 45% more likely to survive a crash by wearing a seat belt. This campaign emphasizes child restraint and seat belt law compliance and funding for this initiative has been granted by our safety partners at the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office.
