The Lincoln Police Department today announced it will conduct a traffic enforcement project on weekends from August 15 through 30 focused on removing impaired drivers from city streets. This campaign is part of a nationwide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign led by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration to reduce crashes, injuries and fatalities caused by impaired driving. Data shows 30% of all traffic fatalities were alcohol-related and nearly 62% of those fatally injured were not wearing seat belts. In 2022, 6,325 Nebraska drivers were arrested for DUI. There were 77 alcohol-related fatalities and a 3.6% increase in DUI’s for 2023. Among all alcohol-related crashes in Nebraska, there were 76 fatalities and an additional 602 injuries in 2020. Thanks to grant funding from the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office, officers will be able to dedicate additional hours to this important effort without being pulled away for routine calls. Plan ahead. Make a safe choice. Drive sober or get pulled over.
