LPD Summer Speed Project set for June, July | 2025

Published on June 04, 2025

The Lincoln Police Department (LPD) today announced that the Traffic Enforcement Unit will conduct a dedicated speed enforcement project in June and July. Officers will work overtime to focus on reducing speed-related dangers on Lincoln streets.

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding is one of the most dangerous and persistent traffic violations. In 2022, speeding was a contributing factor in 29% of all traffic fatalities nationwide, claiming more than 12,000 lives. Speed reduces a driver’s reaction time, increases the severity of crashes, and puts all roadway users at greater risk, including pedestrians, cyclists and other drivers.

Traveling just 10 mph over the speed limit can mean the difference between a near miss and a serious crash. This summer, LPD asks drivers to slow down and make safe choices. Our goal is not just enforcement – it’s saving lives.

LPD encourages all residents to be mindful of their speed, especially in neighborhoods, construction zones and areas with high pedestrian traffic. Officers will be visible and active throughout the city as part of this summer-long effort to reduce dangerous driving behaviors.

This enforcement project is made possible by a grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office.
