The Lincoln Police Department is investigating a homicide that happened in northwest Lincoln shortly after midnight on Christmas Eve.

Early Tuesday morning, just after 12:30 a.m., Lincoln Police responded to the Bridgeport Apartments, 4801 N. 15th Street, on the report of gunshots.

When officers arrived, they found a 20-year-old Lincoln man with multiple gunshot wounds outside on the grass on the south side of the building. He was taken by ambulance to a hospital where he died.

During the investigation, officers determined the victim and his 16-year-old brother had arrived at the apartment complex together, in separate vehicles. While walking up to the building, the 16-year-old saw an unknown individual described as wearing dark clothing.

After a disturbance on Friday, December 20, where he was jumped by a group of people in the parking lot of a business near 21st and ‘K’ Streets, the suspect was in fear for his safety and fired multiple rounds.

The investigation ultimately determined the unknown person was actually the 20-year-old brother. Both males were in possession of firearms. The victim’s gun was recovered at the scene.

The 16-year-old was taken into custody at the hospital and will face charges of manslaughter and use of a weapon to commit a felony.

At this time, LPD is not releasing the names of the suspect or victim to give their family time to notify loved ones during this tragedy.

Investigators continue to interview witnesses and secure the scene. Anyone with information or video of the incident is asked to call Lincoln Police at 402-441-6000. To remain anonymous, you can call Crime Stoppers at 402-475-3600, report a tip online at lincolncrimestoppers.com or by downloading the free P3 app.
