UPDATE (February 11, 2025 - 9 a.m.) | The Lincoln Police Department Traffic Unit has cited a Lincoln man in a fatal crash that occurred on Sunday, August 4, 2024. 28-year-old Parker Durham was cited and released for reckless driving. Durham was driving west on W. Denton Road between 1st and S. Folsom just before 1 a.m. that morning when he was involved in a collision with a pedestrian. He told officers he saw a pedestrian in the road, swerved to miss them but struck another pedestrian, later identified as 25-year-old Rico Benavidez. The investigation determined Durham was driving at least 81 mph in a 45 mph zone. That speed, combined with known dangers in the area, constituted reckless driving.

UPDATE (August 5, 2024 - 9:30 a.m.) | The victim has been identified as 25-year-old Rico Benavidez. The preliminary investigation determined a 2024 Toyota GR 86 was driving westbound on W. Denton Road. The driver had turned the vehicle to the left to avoid a pedestrian in the road and collided with a second person who had been crossing the road on the passenger side of the vehicle. ***
Lincoln Police Officers and personnel from Lincoln Fire & Rescue were dispatched to the area of Denton Road and 1st Street on a report of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. Upon arrival they located a 25-year-old Crete man who had been struck by a vehicle eastbound on Denton Road. Emergency personnel rendered aid and the man was transported to a Lincoln hospital but eventually succumbed to his injuries. The driver of the vehicle remained at the scene. A section of the Denton Road west of 1st Street was closed for the investigation but has now reopened. This investigation is still ongoing and the Lincoln Police Department requests anyone with information, to include video/audio recordings of this event to contact the non- emergency number at 402 441-6000 or Crimestoppers at 402 475-3600 if they wish to remain anonymous. No names are being released at this time, pending family notification.
