Lincoln Police Investigating Homicide | S. 13th & E Streets

UPDATE (December 5, 9:30 a.m.) | The Lincoln Police Department is identifying the victim in Thursday's homicide as 24-year-old Jarell Wheeler of Lincoln. Our thoughts go out to his family during this difficult time. His brother, 23-year-old Emanuel Greenwalt-Claypool of Lincoln, is in the Lancaster County Jail for 2nd degree murder, use of a firearm to commit a felony and 2nd degree assault.

This all unfolded just after 11 a.m. on Thursday at the Casey’s General Store at 13th and ‘E’ when officers responded to the report of multiple gunshot victims in the store. When officers arrived, they found Wheeler with life-threatening gunshot wounds and a 38-year-old man from Martell, Nebraska, with non-life-threatening gunshot wounds. Officers on scene began providing first aid to both victims. Lincoln Fire & Rescue took over life-saving measures. Both were taken to an area hospital where Wheeler passed away from his injuries. The 38-year-old man was struck twice. He’s since been released from the hospital and is expected to be okay.

Initial witness statements indicated there was a disturbance in the parking lot before the shooting, but we’ve since determined that was not the case. LPD investigators learned Claypool was working as a delivery driver for store products and arrived at the store to make a delivery at the same time Wheeler was leaving the store.

Based on store surveillance video and witness statements, we’ve determined Wheeler came back inside, left and then came back again, running toward Claypool with his arm raised. At nearly the same time Wheeler began to run, Claypool reached for the firearm in the front of his waistband and ultimately shot Wheeler multiple times. Additional shots also hit the innocent bystander standing at a cooler nearby.
Claypool remained on scene, surrendered his 9mm handgun to police and cooperated with the investigation.
