Published on March 20, 2024

In recognition of April as designated as Distracted Driving Awareness Month, the Lincoln Police Department will conduct a Red Light/Distracted Driving Traffic Enforcement Project Monday, April 1, through Monday, April 8.

This project, funded by a grant from the Nebraska Department of Transportation Highway Safety Office, will assign additional officers around Lincoln intersections with high crash rates to monitor red light violations and drivers distracted by cell phones. There will be strict enforcement of both traffic signal violations and the use of a wireless communication device while driving. The fine for violating a traffic signal is $75 and $200 for texting while driving.

In 2023, the Lincoln Police Department investigated more than 1,780 crashes where it was reported that at least one driver operated a motor vehicle in an inattentive, careless, negligent or erratic manner.
