Lincoln Fire and Rescue Welcomes New Ladder Truck to Station 1

Published on October 19, 2023

Lincoln Fire and Rescue (LFR) today announced the addition of a new ladder truck to the city’s public safety fleet. The new Truck 1 will be put into service Thursday, October 19, and replaces an apparatus at Station 1, 1801 “Q” St.

The previous Truck 1, purchased in 2010, will become Truck 21, a reserve vehicle for use when one of LFR’s four frontline trucks is temporarily removed from service for maintenance.

“With the new Truck 1 replacement, all LFR ladder vehicles now have the same 105’ capability,” said LFR Chief Eric Jones, Logistics Division. Chief Jones added that the new addition allows LFR to retire a vehicle purchased in 1997 that was being used as a reserve truck and assign it to LFR’s training facility at Third and South streets for training use only.

The new truck has the same features as Truck 5, which was added in April. They include:

  • 105’ ladder
  • Self-leveling system to provide more safety when the ladder is extended
  • Interior air purification system
  • Remote control ladder to help facilitate technical rescues when visibility is obstructed
  • Additional emergency lighting for better visibility in traffic
  • A tapered rear end which increases cargo space, increases maneuverability, and allows for more direct and safer access to the ladder

The new vehicle cost $1.08 million, with money provided through the $8.4 million in Cares Act federal funding allocated to the City of Lincoln for public safety.

LFR Chief Dave Engler said the new truck continues the City’s investment in public safety and a strong firefighting fleet. In August, LFR added an off-road “brush rig” vehicle at Station 10, 4421 N. 24th St. In April, LFR added a new ladder truck to Station 5, 3640 Touzalin Ave. In February, LFR announced 115 new pieces of lifesaving equipment. LFR has added 18 new vehicles since 2019.

Lincoln Fire and Rescue is a combined fire and emergency services department and has been a Commission on Fire Accreditation International (CFAI) accredited agency since 1997. LFR responds to 911 calls for assistance in Lincoln and provides mutual aid to surrounding communities upon request.
