City Action Would Provide Land for Malone Center Expansion

The Lincoln City Council today held a hearing on action that would vacate a parcel of City property near 21st and Vine streets for a Malone Community Center expansion project. The City Council votes next Monday, June 12, on the transfer to the Malone Center. City officials recommended sale of the land at the price of $1.

“We enthusiastically support the Malone Center’s expansion with this transfer of property,” said Mayor Leirion Gaylor Baird. “This project will enable the Center to serve even more community members through its programs that promote health and wellness for Lincoln’s children, mothers, and families.”

The .39 acre lot just north of the Center is bordered by Antelope Creek on the west, N. 22nd Street on the east, and Vine Street on the north. The space was created when Vine Street was re-routed to the new Antelope Valley Parkway.

The Malone Center plans to demolish their current building at 2032 “U” St. and replace it with a new, three-story 52,000 square foot facility and additional parking.

“Our new space will reflect our commitment to growth and excellence and serve as a platform for our work building the path out of poverty for those we serve. We will build Malone’s new facility and realize our vision of prosperity and growth for the Lincoln community,” said John Goodwin, Malone Center Director.

Features of the new building will include office space, classrooms, community space such as a computer lab, lounge and conference rooms, a gymnasium, locker rooms and a kitchen.
