Public survey available online until February 18

The City of Lincoln invites residents to participate in a survey and two town hall meetings in February regarding measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in our community.

The events are as follows:

  • Virtual Town Hall Meeting, Monday, February 5, 7 p.m. – To register, contact Kim Morrow, Chief Sustainability Officer, at kcmorrow@lincoln.ne.gov.
  • Town Hall Meeting, Thursday, February 8, 6 to 8 p.m. – The event will be in the cafeteria of Park Middle School, 855 S. Eighth St. Attendees should enter the building through Door 5.
  • Online Survey – The Greenhouse Gas Reduction Measures Survey is available until February 18 at lincoln.ne.gov/Resilient.

In 2021, the City of Lincoln adopted a Climate Action Plan intended to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by 80% by 2050. Feedback from residents gathered from the survey and meetings will help the City create a Priority Climate Action Plan (PCAP) that identifies near-term actions and policies that can be implemented to reduce emissions. Creating a PCAP will qualify the City for federal funding to implement strategies outlined in the 2021 Climate Action Plan.

The greenhouse gas reduction strategies under consideration include:

Energy

  • Heat pumps and high efficiency appliances
  • Energy efficiency/ electrification/ weatherization
  • Renewable energy
  • Rooftop solar
  • Solar on critical infrastructure
  • Transportation

Waste

  • Switch medium and heavy-duty vehicles to biodiesel
  • Install more EV chargers
  • Transition City fleet to alternative fuels
  • Create more bike lanes

Biogas Capture

  • Production of biochar from urban wood waste
  • Anaerobic digestion of institutional food waste
  • Reduce and collect food waste for composting

Natural Solutions

  • Plant more trees

The in-person town hall meeting is co-hosted by the Nebraska Department of Energy and Environment. The survey and meetings are part of the Climate Pollution Reduction Grant program from the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Nebraska received a planning grant from this program to create a state climate action plan. The City of Lincoln received a sub-award from the Nebraska Department of Energy and Environment to update its climate action plan.
