City Winter Operations Crews Prepared for Snowstorm
Published on January 03, 2025
Lincoln Transportation and Utilities Maintenance Operations and Fleet Services Manager Tim Byrne today said that winter operation crews are prepared for a potential snowstorm that is expected to produce 4 to 6 inches of snow in Lincoln Saturday, January 4, and Sunday, January 5.
Byrne said winter operation crews are working in advance of the storm and will plow around the clock if necessary to maintain Lincoln’s streets.
“We have been busy today applying brine pre-treatment to all arterial streets,” Byrne said. “Crews are ready for the snow and will prioritize plowing emergency, school, and bus routes through the storm. We will continue to evaluate conditions throughout the storm to determine if parking bans and residential plowing will be needed.”
Residents are reminded to shovel sidewalks and around fire hydrants and mailboxes by 9 a.m. the day following the snowstorm. To reduce the amount of snow pushed back into driveways during plowing, the City recommends shoveling snow 6 feet to the left of your driveway’s edge.
After a winter storm has passed and residential plowing begins, residents are encouraged to follow these actions:
- Watch: Watch for the storm to end. Crews are only able to respond to resident service requests once priority streets have been fully serviced.
- Review: Review the Snowplow Tracker and the Residential Snowplow Tracker at lincoln.ne.gov/snow to monitor snowplowing progress. Please pause residential street requests unless your service area is shaded in dark green, which means it has been serviced, inspected, and approved. If your service area is not shaded in dark green, crews are still plowing and may solve your issue soon.
- Request: If your service area is shaded in dark green but requires additional attention, residents can make a service request at lincoln.ne.gov/UPLNK. Crews will address service requests after priority snowplowing is complete.
Residents should be prepared for winter weather driving conditions. Tips and reminders include:
- Stock vehicles with winter roadside kits that include ice melt, small shovel, flashlight, blankets and handwarmers.
- If safe to do so, stay with a stranded vehicle until it can be moved.
- If it is not safe to stay with your vehicle, call the Lincoln Police Department non-emergency number at 402-441-6000.
- Wait to file police reports if there is no urgency.
- If you have an emergency, dial 911 and officers will respond.
StarTran reminds residents to dress appropriately for outdoor conditions, wait 8 feet away from the street to avoid snow or slush spray, wear reflective clothing at night for bus operators to easily see riders at bus stops, and check the RideLNK app for any route updates. Visit lincoln.ne.gov/StarTran for bus route information.
Residents are encouraged to stay informed about snowstorm updates. Updates will be available through local media, on the City’s Facebook and X accounts, and via email sign up notifications. Community members can sign up for email updates at lincoln.ne.gov/Snow. Additionally, the Snowplow Tracker at lincoln.ne.gov/Snow provides real-time information about plowing progress.
