Parks and Recreation staff will conduct a controlled burn at 9 a.m. Saturday, April 19, in about 20 acres of Wilderness Park near the 14th Street trailhead parking lot between Yankee Hill Road and Rokeby Road.
The Wilderness Park Green Trail east of marker 68 will be closed until noon Monday, April 21. Community members are advised to avoid the area during this project.
“Controlled burns are a vital land management tool, especially in areas with native grasses and plants,” said Aaron Druery, Parks and Recreation Greenways District Supervisor. “They help prevent the spread of invasive species like cedar trees before they outcompete native vegetation, reduce wildfire risk by limiting excess dry material, and enhance overall habitat health and biodiversity. Our team closely monitors weather conditions and air quality to ensure each burn is carried out safely.”
