LTU Provides Update on Traffic Signal Repairs and Replacement

Lincoln Transportation and Utilities (LTU) today announced that work to repair and replace traffic signal equipment is scheduled to begin this fall at seven intersections. The projects are expected to be completed by the end of the year. For the repair schedule and interactive project map, visit lincoln.ne.gov/SignalRepair.

The signals were damaged by severe weather and vehicle crashes. Each project will restore safe, reliable signal operations and ensure the continued safety and efficiency of Lincoln’s street network. All projects are currently in the design phase and awaiting parts, some of which are in high demand due to storms that affected many cities.

Project details include:

  • The intersection of 14th and Adams streets has been temporarily converted to a four-way stop to ensure continued safety and traffic flow. The project will restore traffic signal operations at this intersection and include a new pole and span wires to serve southbound and eastbound traffic.
  • The intersection of 14th Street and Pine Lake Road will undergo two phases of repair. Work to install temporary wood poles and span wires that will restore full traffic operations is expected to be completed by mid-May. Work will continue in late fall to install permanent signal arms and remove the temporary equipment.
  • Work at the intersections of 70th Street and Nebraska Parkway and 70th and “O” streets will replace traffic signal poles damaged in separate vehicle crashes. The existing poles are still in place and will remain until permanent repairs are made in fall.
  • At the intersection of 33rd Street and 33rd Circle, near Lincoln North Star High School, crews have temporarily repaired a traffic signal mast arm that was damaged by high winds during a severe weather event.
  • Temporary signal trailers will be used until fall at 14th Street and Pine Lake Road, 56th Street and Old Cheney Road, and I-180 and Superior Street.

To complete these repairs, street lane closures will be required. Sidewalk and pedestrian crossing closures may also occur at some locations. LTU will provide advance notice and updates as construction approaches.
