Health Department Urges Residents to Prepare for Extreme Heat

Published on June 18, 2025

The National Weather Service has issued an extreme heat watch for Lincoln and Lancaster County effective from 10 a.m. Friday, June 20, through 9 p.m. Sunday, June 22. Dangerously hot conditions with heat index values up to 110 are possible.
The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department encourages residents to prepare for extreme heat and closely monitor changing weather conditions in the coming days.

“High heat and humidity can cause heat-related illnesses,” said Kerry Kernen, Health Director. “We’re fortunate to have a little lead time and we can use it to take steps to prepare and help lessen the impact of heat on our health and our community, if temperatures continue to rise.”
Know your risk
Anyone can suffer from heat-related illness. Some people are at greater than others including:
  • Infants, young children, pregnant people and older adults whose bodies are less able to adapt to heat

  • Pets, service or support animals and livestock

Prepare yourself and your family
  • Know your neighbors and be ready to check on them along with family and friends who may be at higher risk or who live alone.
  • Learn more about the signs of heat-related illness and treatment.
  • Know where you can stay cool in case you need to go there. Locations could include recreation centers, Lincoln City Libraries and senior centers.

Prepare your pets
