Child Care Program Operator and Staff Training Requirements (L.M.C. 8.14)

All staff must complete 2 hours of health and safety training within 30 days of employment and every two years thereafter. The operator shall maintain an up to date list of all (full, part time and substitute) employees and training received. In addition, staff responsible for receiving, holding or preparing food must hold at least a Prep/Cook Food Handler Permit. Staff only serving food must practice no bare hand contact for ready-to-eat foods. To register or access food safety information visit our food safety page.

Child Care Health and Safety Training

This free two hour course is one option to fulfill the health and safety training requirements. To register, e-mail: healthychildcare@lincoln.ne.gov, at least 3 business days in advance. Walk-in’s will not be allowed. Trainings will be offered via Zoom. When you register, please provide; first and last name, the center you work at, phone number, and email address that you will be using during the Zoom training. Course materials will be emailed and a certificate will be sent upon completion of the course. *This Training is approved as an equivalent to the State of Nebraska’s Prepare to Care Health and Safety Training.

Alternative Training

Alternative Training is an option to fulfill the health and safety training requirement. It can be completed through books, videos, on-line training courses and by attending other training. Alternative Training is not transferable center to center. All staff utilizing the Alternative Training option must complete and keep on file the “LLCHD Alternative Training Form”. The Alternative Training include all the following health and safety practices for approval:

- Cleanliness (hand washing, diapering, food safety, cleaning, sanitizing and disinfecting)

- Illness Prevention (illness prevention, and illness exclusion)

- Safety (injury prevention, toy safety, and supervision)

Training Documentation

Each child care program is responsible for tracking and documenting staff training requirements. The Environmental Health Specialist may review training records during and inspection. In order to keep track of required trainings, please use this link(DOCX, 35KB) to acquire the document.
