Overview
The Health Promotion and Outreach Division works to strengthen the public’s health and safety to improve quality of life. Our team of health educators is committed to enriching the lives of all people, so individuals have the knowledge and support they need to assume responsibility for their own health.
This work is done through three key essential public health services:
- Communicate effectively to inform and educate people about health issues, factors that influence it, and how to improve it.
- Strengthen, support, and mobilize community partnerships to improve health.
- Create, champion, and implement policies, plans, and laws that impact health.
Our programs focus on: active living, healthy eating, tobacco and vaping prevention, overdose prevention, preventive health screenings, and injury prevention. Examples include:
- Car seat checks and training for safe transportation of children.
- Promoting safe walking and biking routes.
- Youth tobacco / vaping prevention and education.
- Tobacco-free campus resources.
- Youth substance use prevention and harm reduction strategies to promote well-being.
- Information and referral for cancer screenings (specifically breast, cervical, and colon).
- Educating families and child-care providers on assessing and reducing injury hazards for children.
