This project includes new pavement, one lane in each direction with a raised center median, new roundabouts at South 44th, South 48th and South 52nd streets, new water, new sewer, box culvert drainage extensions, new sidewalks with curb ramps to meet Americans with Disabilities compliance, and utility work to serve the growing development in this area.
As a part of the City’s commitment in the Wilderness Heights - S 40th St & Yankee Hill Rd annexation agreement of December 2008, this project will promote private sector investment into the community by helping serve an approved 1,547 multi-family dwellings, 216 single-family dwelling units plus sizable commercial space of potentially over 300,000 square feet through improving safety and capacity of the transportation system.
Construction Progress - June 2022
Current work includes placing concrete for construction of the roundabout at South 44th Street and erosion control measures as needed.
This project was approved April 13, 2020 to receive a portion of the 25% of the revenues reserved for construction of new non-residential streets to promote private sector investment after receiving a recommendation from the Advisory Committee on Transportation. The City already has several annexation agreements with developers regarding new streets in “growth” areas. However, many of these street projects could not get underway due to a lack of funding. The portion of the sales tax for new street construction to promote private sector investment will help these projects move forward. Most of this portion of the project will be funded through a Developer Loan/ Directed Impact Fees.
Construction began September 28, 2021 and the project is anticipated to be completed between December 16-24, 2022, with seeding in the spring of 2023.
Access During Construction
Yankee Hill Road will be closed to through traffic during construction. Access to residences in the area will be maintained whenever possible. The recommended detour route is South 40th Street to Pine Lake Road to South 56th Street. Digital signs will alert traffic to upcoming work and closures. Travelers are encouraged to follow the suggested detour route or seek an alternate route and exercise caution around the work zone.
