I Have a Lead Service Line… Now What?

There are a few ways to help determine if you have a lead service line, including looking up your property on Lincoln Water System's interactive map and checking the part of your service line that is visible inside your home.

Reduce Your Lead Exposure

If you have a lead service line or other plumbing that has lead, follow the steps to reduce your lead exposure found here: How to Reduce Your Exposure

Consider Replacing Your Service Line

For homes with lead service lines, the service line typically contributes the greatest percentage of lead to the tap water, so replacing the old pipe with copper can be very beneficial. Service lines belong to and are maintained by the property owner.

All properties with lead or lead-contaminated galvanized service lines will be included in the Lead Service Line Replacement (LSLR) Program. The current project area(s) and other LSLR Program information can be found here:

If you think you may have a lead service line and wish to replace it at your cost, contact a plumber for a price quote to confirm the service line is lead and replace it.

Consider Replacing Your Galvanized Pipes

If your home has galvanized pipes, these pipes may have lead deposits from the lead service line that have become attached to the inside of the galvanized pipes. These particles of lead can come loose and be released into the water even after your lead service line has been removed. Complete removal of galvanized plumbing, after a lead service line has been replaced, is the only way to make sure that lead will not be released from these pipes. If complete removal is not possible, consider replacing the pipes that run to your faucets used for drinking and cooking, such as the kitchen and bathrooms. If you cannot remove your galvanized pipes, there are other ways to reduce your exposure to lead released from them. Replacing your lead service line will prevent future lead contamination of your interior pipes.
