Baroque Cherub Fountain

A cherub on a pedestal in the middle of the fountain

About the Sculpture

This French Baroque cast-iron fountain has stood in the center of Hazel Abel Park since its dedication on September 26, 1982. This fountain is one of the oldest objects in Lincoln as it was made around 1840 in Paris. It was donated by the Lincoln Altrusa Club, a service organization of 75 business and professional women. The fountain features a cherub holding a shell that spills water over the edges above its head. The cherub stands on a dolphin-based pedestal with various flora included. Cherubs or putti are the protectors of the Garden of Eden, so they are often found as symbols of protection in gardens and fountains.

This French, baroque, cast iron fountain with its cherubim holding a shell, was created in the 1840's and is an original park feature. It's the center of the brick strolling path, bordered by white roses and boxwoods. The parks playground is nearby.
