Palo Alto I

The top half of the Palo Alto sculpture, a woman's body with the head replaced by an abstract figure

About the Sculpture

Created in 2008, Palo Alto I by John Buck was acquired for the City by Public Art Lincoln in 2017. It is located within the Rotary Strolling Gardens set within the Antelope Park triangle.

The abstract symbols represent a tree, as well as man's power over the environment. He had been inspired during his trip to Israel where he learned of the purposeful destruction of the cedar trees in Lebanon. The tree form emerges in two ways. The first is the obvious: the woman's body representing the trunk with the abstract form as the crown. The second is shown through a smaller landscape that emerges from the cut off shoulders of the torso. Buck had another influence in Eadweard Muybridge's photographic studies on movement. This freestanding form is both stationary and constantly moving, continually taking a step forward.
