Solar Semaphore

Two red circles overlap on top of a spike

About the Sculpture

This large barn-red was installed on the corner of 12th and O Street in late September of 1979 at what was Centrum Plaza at the time. The main elements of Solar Semaphore are two aluminum circles on either side of a sharp steel pole that juts out from the ground at an oblique angle. The two red circles are designed to spin with the wind in opposite directions to symbolize man's relationship with the sun and wind.

The sculpture made the journey to Lincoln from Oakland, California after sitting in artist, Jerome Kirk's front yard for 2 weeks. Two observes in California commented that, "Lincoln, Nebraska, will never be the same".
