The Lincoln Police Department (LPD) is investigating a fatal domestic violence incident. At this early stage of the investigation, LPD believes it was a murder-suicide. It occurred just after midnight on Wednesday, March 19, at an apartment complex in the area of S. 22nd and ‘G’ Streets in southwest Lincoln. Officers responded around 12:10 a.m. on the report of gunshots. A 13-year-old boy inside the apartment called 911 to report that he and his mother had been shot. When they arrived, officers found a 44-year-old Lincoln man deceased on the floor of a bedroom. He had what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. A 40-year-old Lincoln woman was found with an apparent gunshot wound. Lincoln Fire & Rescue took her to a local hospital where she died from her injuries. Paramedics took the 13-year-old to a local hospital in critical condition with an apparent gunshot wound where he was immediately taken into surgery. He is expected to survive. Right now, LPD believes the man shot the woman and boy before taking his own life. A gun and multiple casings were recovered from the apartment unit. LPD is not yet releasing the names of the individuals involved to give the family time to grieve and notify loved ones. At this time, it remains unclear whether the couple was married but the official status of their relationship is not a primary focus of this investigation. The priority is understanding what happened and why. Officers also found two other siblings in the residence – a 15-year-old girl and an eight-year-old boy. Neither were physically injured in the shooting but will undoubtedly experience emotional distress from this senseless tragedy. Both uninjured children were taken to the BraveBe Child Advocacy Center for forensic interviews. LPD would like to thank our partners at BraveBe for their continued dedication to support the youngest in our community who are victims or witnesses of violence. LPD is also working closely with Lincoln Public Schools, where all three children attend school. LPS is always proactive about providing support and services to impacted students and families. Families who need extra support are encouraged to reach out to their child’s school today. While the district is closed due to weather, we’re told counselors will be available in school buildings tomorrow. This is the second fatal domestic violence incident in Lincoln in the last month. Our hearts break for those whose lives were cut unnecessarily short at the hands of perpetrators whose actions have caused irreversible harm and must be held accountable. Lincoln offers many domestic violence resources. The LPD Victim Assistance Unit is available to anyone in need of support or guidance, not only victims of crimes. Voices of Hope and Friendship Home both work diligently to protect and uplift those who are survivors in abusive situations. The National Domestic Violence Hotline is also available 24/7 at 800-799-SAFE (7233). The investigation is active and ongoing. The LPD Criminal Investigations Unit will continue to piece together the circumstances of this tragedy by conducting interviews and examining evidence. Autopsies will be completed to help determine an official cause and manner of death.
