Health Department Invites Families to Free Lead Testing Event Oct. 23
Published on October 16, 2025
The Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department (LLCHD) invites families to a free lead testing event Thursday, October 23. The “Test and Protect” event will be from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Lincoln-Lancaster County Health Department, 3131 “O” St. No appointment is needed.
Children younger than age 6 can receive free blood lead screenings and must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Families can also bring in household items like dishes, toys and small furniture to be tested for lead.
“Lead poisoning is a serious health concern, especially for young children, but it is also preventable. We encourage families to attend our free lead testing event. Testing is the only way to know if your child has been exposed to lead,” said Kerry Kernen, Health Director.
Even small amounts of lead in the body can cause lasting damage, including learning difficulties, behavioral problems and slowed growth. Pregnant women and workers in certain industries are also at higher risk.
The most common sources of childhood lead exposure are lead-based paint found in many homes built before 1978 and lead contaminated dust from paint. Lead dust can contaminate the home and get on children’s hands, toys, bottles, and other objects. Water, soil, certain spices, and some cookware can also be sources of exposure to lead.
National Lead Poisoning Prevention Week is October 19 through 25. During this week, health departments across the United States, as well as state and federal partners, work together to raise awareness about the health effects of lead and how to prevent lead exposure.
