Starting September 4, portions of the Rock Island Trail between South and Calvert streets will be closed for improvement projects. The work is expected to be complete by November 1 and includes drainage work to reduce mud and ice on the trail, and improved pedestrian routes. Some tree removal on the trail near the Penny Bridges at Sheridan Blvd. will be required to grade for proper drainage.
The first phase of the project will take place between South Street and Van Dorn Blvd. and be completed in mid-September. Trail users are advised to exit the trail at South St. and use either Winthrop Road to the west, or S. 33rd Street to the east, to rejoin the trail at Van Dorn Blvd.
The second phase will include trail surface replacement underneath and south of the Penny Bridges. The recommended detour during this phase is to exit the trail at Van Dorn Blvd. and use 31st Street to the west, or S. 33rd St. to the east, to rejoin the trail at Calvert St. This phase is scheduled to be completed in early October.
